Dear friend,
There hasn't been much knitting going on around these parts lately, I am sad to say. It's just so difficult when what you require for a cozy afternoon of knitting are smoky skies, kettles of tea, pots of chocolate, peppermint marshmallows, and campfire weather. Your needles all in a row. Yarn properly sorted in the basket. And perhaps a purple, snow-capped mountain or two looming in the distance. Is that too much to ask?
I'm expecting to lose all interest in this pastime come April, when the daffodils surface along with my sewing machine for sherbert-colored batiste dresses and summer quilts.
I mean, let's be honest, I'm now actually baffled by this weather, even for Tennessee, who I thought for sure could throw me no new red herrings. It reminds me of our first winter here...Manley and I were renting the oldest, most charming home that was literally falling apart. We moved here that October, anxious for a "real winter" (those of you who live above the Mason-Dixon line, I KNOW you are chuckling right now). Manley was so excited he practically fell asleep each night with his face pressed against the windowpane, lulled to sleep by the promise of snow that just never came. No snow in December. January: nothing.
And then one mid-February morning, we woke up to a strange and muffled silence. I had made these and hung them in our kitchen window, right above the ancient and ginormous ceramic tub sink we used to scrub with baking soda, and that morning the light streaming through them was brilliant. And there it was, a blanket of snow. More like a duvet, really. It was a full-blown frenzy after that. Our one white Christmas was dreamy too, but I think I'd even trade it for a snowy Valentine's day. All those hearts in all that white. I don't know if we'll have that this year.
But until then, what I do have is this hat, which I finished yesterday and is Ravelry-ied here. This lady sent me this yarn, and I fell fast in love. It is SOOOO soft, almost velvety, and seems to hold its shape a little better than the Malabrigo I've been so enamored by.
New things I learned while knitting this hat:
1. Making a pom-pom with cardboard circles. I vaguely remember doing something similar to this in the third grade, but I don't remember it feeling like such a revelation!
2. Stranded colorwork. And, at the end, stranded colorwork with four double-pointed-needles. Scary.
3. Continental-style knitting, for the contrasting color. I feel so cultured now!
So, I'm learning slowly, but next winter I will be prepared. Now I'm afraid it's time for me to make a pot of coffee and settle in for a long afternoon of painting. You know what they say, man can not live by knitting alone. Or...something like that.
Love,
Rebekka

It's beautiful! Oh my goodness is it beautiful. I can't wait to show the lady who made it! <3
Goodness, you just started your knitting adventure and look at all the fancy-pants things you're already doing--bravo!!! That hat is the perfect Valentine accessory, if I do say.
And that yarn looks completely gorgeous, I may have to go lurk a bit on their website... ;)
Adorable!
You can come out to Portland and knit with me in the snow on Mt. Hood anytime!
Gorgeous hat! I may have to think about taking up knitting one day!
yikes.
i love your blog so much.
You knit too! What don't you do? I knit as well, but I've fallen victim to the same lack of winter blues that you have, I fear. Usually, when my needles lie fallow in the summer, I think, "Oh, it's okay. I'll see you again in January." Not so this year. Unless I live someplace where it's decidedly warm, I want winter to be winter!
Gorgeous hat, tho. xo
Lauren,
I'll tell you what I don't do...garden! Oh, how I wish I had a green thumb but plants and flowers just escape me. I love them, though! If I could only have a gardener!!

Oh, I love it! You always pick the best knitting projects, and then I always want to make one for myself. Thanks for the inspiration! I added the pattern to my favorites on Ravelry.

I've been learning to crochet. A New Years promise to myself to learn something creatively new. I had hoped to be snuggled on my comfy sofa, fire slowly burning, sweet black kitten cuddled in my lap, pug at my feet & warm steamy cappuccino in reach. Crocheting tiny hearts for Valentines Day. I have continued to crochet. No fire in the fireplace. Kitten is curled up in my yarn basket. Pug is outside in the sunshine. I too long for Miss Winter to show herself. I must however, indulge in an afternoon cappuccino!
I love it!
The winter's pretty blah across here, too. Actually, that's not true - it's back to a normal Scottish winter (two days of snows, lots of days of sleet and wind), but the last two were so crazy snowy it doesn't feel right any more.
that hat is so cute! and looks so difficult to make. I am truly impressed!
Isn't it funny how the weather and mood in air influences or hobbies and activities? I feel the same way about knitting. I love that little hat, it's very cute! I LOVE color, esp red, but lately I have been on a neutral yarn kick, and I am obsessed with Cascade's Eco-duo yarns. They are so insanely soft and the colors are yummy. Latte and Vanilla are my two faves. I've even put if in my dolls' hair, lol.
I just love your description of how snow changes the color of the light ...it's one of my favorite things ever. I've been stalled on a knitting project for um, more than 3 years (a cardigan that I only have to sew buttons on and finish the collar) but I just might work on it today. Lovely post! :)
Anita,
Wow...if I were knitting a cardigan I'd probably be stuck on it for three years too!!

Oh, that hat!! So wonderful and such a beautiful color.
Sorry about the lack of snow over there....

You're precious. I love how creative and sweet your blog is.
I am so impressed! What a beautiful hat! I love reading your blogs- it's like stepping in to a dream world:)
that hat is gorgeous! I love the hearts! :) Pom poms really are the greatest! I am a somewhat seasonal knitter as well. When it gets warm the world calls and my needles are often left inside.
are you making and selling these? i LOVE it!!!
Christina,
I am not selling any of the things I knit...because none of them are good enough to sell!!!! There are little imperfections everywhere. But, gosh, I am SOO flattered that you asked!!
